The cardboard tiles that I made to represent the ocean and coast ended up warping really badly. So I decided to try a trick that was suggested from the internets. The trick is to use cheap linoleum adhesive tiles (70 cents a square at Lowes). It's not perfect, but still a significant improvement.

Prep the tile with Elmer's Glue
For the coast, I went down to Heretic Games and used some of my store credit to buy grit and added a sandy/rocky texture to the beach:
You can also convert the coast tiles into a river
