My goal is to get the four new PCs joined up with Smugly and Moss at the Winery with the new guys fully informed of what’s going on. After that you guys can do whatever you want.
The Adventure Hook
A Harper agent named Zel who lives in Daggerford has put out an urgent call to investigate reports of Werewolves harassing the hamlet of Egzand. You four have answered this call. Your relationships with each other are up to you. Maybe you’re four lone wolves that are strangers to each other, maybe you’ve known each other for decades, or anything in between.
The Prologue:
Most of the action before uniting all six members will be narrated with a small opportunity for roleplaying. There will also be one fight with a bunch of wolves. This is a chance to figure out your new powers.
You’ll start in the town of Daggerford, then go to Egzand Hamlet to investigate. Eventually you’ll follow some werewolf tracks, and you all get swallowed up by the mists. After 30 minutes you will come upon the walled village of Krezk.
The leader informs you that they don’t normally allow anybody into the village but will make an exception for you if you get a shipment of wine from the Wizard of the Wines which is about an hour of travel south. You’ll agree and head off immediately.
You’ll be attacked by a bunch of wolves. It should be an easy to medium difficulty encounter. This is a chance to use all your powers since you will be given a chance for a Long Rest at the winery.
You reach the winery. Davian, the winery owner, has dealt with Harpers before and is likely to trust you. Your characters will then be fully informed about Strahd, Ireena, etc.
After this, your new Gang can do as they please.
NEW CHARACTERS:
Start at 5th level
Use Point Buy.
See page 13 in Players Handbook under Variant: Customizing Ability Scores.
Here’s a link to a point buy calculator that’ll make things easier:
Be sure to input race and subrace in the calculator
Here's a link to available races and classes in campaign:
Start with normal starting equipment from Class and Background.
You can trade in items for gold and buy different equipment.
Example: You’re a fighter that gets Chain Mail as part of your starting equipment, which costs 75gp. You want to upgrade to Splint Mail which costs 200gp. You trade in your Chain Mail and now the Splint Mail costs 125 gp.
500 GP starting gold. You can pool your gold with others to get expensive spell components (see below).
1 Silvered Weapon or 20 pieces of ammunition (Example: arrows).
Harper’s Only Gift: Scroll of Remove Curse for each Harper.
Here’s a link to all equipment available:
Here’s your chance to buy 500,000 ball bearings.
Multiclass. You can multiclass any 5 levels but must have the ability prerequisites. You must choose one class only for Starting Equipment.
Spell Components: You don’t need to worry about most spell components, except spell components that have gold piece cost in their descriptions. You’ll see the cost in the components part in the spell’s description. Below is an example of a spell where you need to buy the component to cast it. In this case it’s a diamond worth 300 gp each time you cast the spell.
Revivify
